Last week we shared the sad news about the passing of our beloved Fr. Greg Lucey, S.J.  He died peacefully in his sleep just before 8 am on Thursday, September 30, surrounded by family. Tuesday, October 12 will be a day to remember Rev. Gregory Francis Lucey, S.J. - Jesuit, Priest, and Friend.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Mary Lou and John Barter Student Center on campus. The College community will gather together, to pray, tell stories and console one another. Memorial Cards and Guest Books for signing will be available. 

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Chapel. Rev. Christopher Viscardi, S.J., will be the Homilist and Celebrant and the Spring Hill College Jesuits l will concelebrate. When the Chapel reaches seating capacity, guests will be directed to view the live stream in LeBlanc Hall on the second floor of the Student Center. 

After the Memorial Mass, there will be a luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the Student Dining Hall. . This is an opportunity for the campus and the community to come together to remember Lucey and share a meal  Plans for burial in the Spring Hill College Cemetery will be announced at a later date. 

The College continues to observe COVID-19 Protocols and masks are required in all indoor spaces on campus. All non-essential campus offices will be closed that day so that faculty and staff may pay their respects and share in the celebration of Fr. Lucey's life. 

Fr. Lucey died at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wis. The St. Camillus Jesuit Community will celebrate a prayer vigil on Thursday, October 14, at 4:15 p.m. There will be a Funeral Mass at the Gesu Church in Milwaukee, Wis. on Friday, October 15, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception following. The service will also be live-streamed here: He asked to be cremated his remains will then be sent to Mobile for interment at Spring Hill College Cemetery at a later date, as he requested.

Fr. Lucey became the 34th President of Spring Hill College on June 1, 1997. In 2005, he received the Civitan Club of Mobile’s “Mobilian of the Year” award in recognition of his many improvements to the campus and his efforts to incorporate the Mobile community. He returned to Spring Hill in 2013 to serve a second term as 36th President until 2015. He was then appointed Chancellor and served the College until 2020. 

Fr. Lucey touched so many lives here at the College and in our community. While his loss will be felt deeply for some time to come, his love for Christ, the College, and the Mobile community will continue to live on. We see evidence of his stewardship all over campus. Everyone has special memories about Fr. Lucey. We all remember encounters, stories, or funny moments. Now is the time for us to hold those memories close to our hearts. Let’s share them and support each other in love and in service as Fr. Lucey did every day. As we reflect on his legacy, remember his family and our community in your prayers.
